Tony Evans pushes Adopt-A- School Program
The groundbreaking family-support services program, created by Dr. Evans, calls for an urban church to adopt a public school. A suburban church would then partner with the urban church to help provide social services. The program is modeled after Project Turn●Around, which has been a resounding success in the Dallas area.
What we’re doing in Dallas can go anywhere,” Dr. Evans has said.
The program started more than 18 years ago when a Dallas high school was having trouble with gang activity and other disruptive behavior. Its principal contacted Dr. Evans, the senior pastor at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship. The church’s social outreach program, Project Turn●Around, sent 12 men to walk the halls. Order was soon restored, truancy went down and grades went up.
Today, close to 70 Dallas-area schools participate in the program. Students receive tutoring, mentoring and other family-support services. Their families also can become eligible for a variety of training programs, as well as help with food, shelter, clothing and preventative health services.
The NCAASI offers workshops to faith-based and community leaders. Through this ministry, Dr. Evans seeks to “rebuild communities from the inside out.”
